The period-end report

A document to take to the board.

The centrepiece is not a chart: it is the first page of the quarterly report. Below is an example, with an invented client and invented figures, read section by section.

  1. 01

At the top, the client and their rule

The client's name, the period, the budget and the range they approved. The report opens with what was written before.

  2. 02

    The covered-share line

The boundary between the two stages on the page: above it, “Written before”; below it, “Proven after”.

  3. 03

The covered share, against the range

How much you were covered, marked against the range in your policy: within, below or above.

  4. 04

    Three figures, line by line

Actual cost, variance from budget, weighted average price. The sign is always shown; the colour tells you whether a value is in your favour or against you.

  5. 05

    The log

Every decision with date, time and sequence number. Including the one not taken, with the reason.

  6. 06

Our fees, set between two lines

The same weight as your figures, in the same place in every report.

The client and figures are examples.

The first step

Start from a bill.

Send us a recent bill and, if you have it, the latest offer you received. We activate your access with your figures already in: what you pay, where today’s price stands against the last two years and your budget, and how much the supplier adds on top of the wholesale price. Then you decide whether it is time to ask for a fixed-price or variable-price offer. No commitment, and no forecasts.
